furazolidone /fu·ra·zol·i·done/ (fu?rah-zol´i-don) an antibacterial and antiprotozoal effective against many gram-negative enteric organisms; used in the treatment of diarrhea and enteritis. furazolidone a nitrofuran antibiotic, used as a local antibacterial and antiprotozoal. Used in poultry and swine as a feed additive to treat bacterial and protozoal intestinal infections. Calves fed low levels of furazolidone over long periods develop a leukopenia, petechial hemorrhages everywhere and are susceptible to infection. It is usually a sequel to prophylactic feeding of antibiotics. See also granulocytopenic calf disease. |
