fungus infections Infection of any part of the body with any fungal organism. Fungus infections of the skin (EPIDERMOPHYTOSES), the mouth and vagina are common, but those of the interior of the body are rare except in people with IMMUNE DEFICIENCY. Skin fungus infections include various forms of ‘ringworm’ (TINEA) from infection with fungi of the genus Trichophyton . (THRUSH) (candidiasis) is infection with the fungus Candida albicans , a yeast fungus which favours the mouth and the vagina. ‘Opportunistic’ fungi are those attacking very debilitated people, people with AIDS, those on immunosuppressive treatment or people with widespread cancer, severe diabetes or long-term (chronic) infections such as tuberculosis.
