frenulum of the tongue
Etymology: L, frenum, bridle; AS, tunge
a longitudinal fold of mucous membrane connecting the floor of the mouth to the underside of the tongue in midline. A congenital defect causes an abnormal shortness of the frenulum, causing tongue-tie, which can be surgically corrected. Also called frenulum linguae, lingual frenum.

The submandibular duct is formed in the superficial part of the gland and passes via the deep part where it opens into the anterior floor of the mouth at the side of the frenulum of the tongue.
