Etymology: Joseph von Fraunhofer, German optician, 1787-1826
the zone farthest from the face of an ultrasound transducer. It is characterized by a divergence of the ultrasound beam and a more uniform ultrasound intensity. Also called far field. See also Fresnel zone.

Fraunhofer zone
in ultrasonography, the area of the sound beam beyond the focal zone where the beam diverges and resolution decreases.
