Fraunhofer zone [froun′hōfər] Etymology: Joseph von Fraunhofer, German optician, 1787-1826 the zone farthest from the face of an ultrasound transducer. It is characterized by a divergence of the ultrasound beam and a more uniform ultrasound intensity. Also called far field. See also Fresnel zone.
