The Fox Islands
Electric Cooperative was founded in 1974 and is owned by the communities on Vinalhaven and North Haven.
The Fox Islands wind project has been successful because of the combination of the residents being faced with relatively high electricity costs and the presence of an excellent wind resource.
For most of the last century, the Fox Islands have secured their electricity through a small investor-owned electric utility--Vinalhaven Light & Power Co.

Virgina Manuel, USDA Rural Development's state director for Maine said: "These essential USDA Rural Development funds will assist Fox Islands
Electric Cooperative with valuable smart grid improvements and will improve nine miles of distribution line for these rural Maine island communities, helping their sustainability in the long run.
