Foundation Trust

An NHS (hospital) Trust which has earned autonomy from tight control by central UK Government by having achieved a three-star rating for the quality of care it provides for its service population (the star rating system ended in 2006 and was replaced by annual health checks). Foundation trusts have quasi-autonomy on budgets and services, but are under the NHS aegis and must maintain the same excellent healthcare that earned them the privilege of independence.
