the fossa formed by the divergence posteriorly of the plates of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone; it lodges the origin of medial pterygoid and the tensor palati muscles.

pterygoid fossa

a depression that separates the medial and lateral plates of each pterygoid process.

pterygoid fossa

The vertical trough between the medial and lateral pterygoid plates of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone. This fossa is on the deep, basal surface of the skull, just outside (lateral to) the nasopharynx.
