fosfomycin /fos·fo·my·cin/ (fos-fo-mi´sin) an antibacterial agent active against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, used in the treatment of urinary tract infection; administered orally as the tromethamine salt. fosfomycin, a urinary antiinfective. indications It is used to treat infections of the urinary tract caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli. contraindications Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. adverse effects Adverse effects include vaginitis, dysuria, hematuria, menstrual disorder, fever, insomnia, somnolence, migraine, asthenia, nervousness, constipation, dry mouth, flatulence, increased SGPT, dyspepsia, and pruritus. It was sensitive to ampicillin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, imipenem, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and fosfomycin but resistant to clarithromycin (MIC 96 mg/L). Combining fosfomycin with an aminoglycoside has been repeatedly shown to protect from ototoxicity, although the reason it does so is unclear. The strain was susceptible to fluoroquinolones and fosfomycin. |
