formaldehyde /for·mal·de·hyde/ (for-mal´di-hid) a gas formerly used as a strong disinfectant; now used as an aqueous solution (see formaldehyde solution, under solution ). The gas is toxic by inhalation or absorption and is carcinogenic.

A colorless, gaseous compound that is the simplest aldehyde, used for manufacturing melamine and phenolic resins, fertilizers, dyes, and embalming fluids and in aqueous solution as a preservative and disinfectant.

n a toxic, pungent water-soluble gas used in the aqueous form as a disinfectant, fixative, or tissue preservative.

formaldehyde
a gaseous compound with strongly disinfectant properties. It is used in solution (formol) for disinfection of excreta and utensils and also in the preparation of toxoids from toxins, and as a gas for the fumigation of hatching eggs. As formalin also used in the treatment of grain and forage and causes enteritis if the feed is improperly mixed.
