flight distance the distance that agricultural and wild animals like to keep between themselves and a threat of danger. The distance varies with the degree of wildness of the animals and the circumstances. Called also the circle of safety, critical, fright or guard distance. Important in planning animal handling facilities, yards, zoos and the like. Neglect of the need to provide adequate space in which an animal can escape will lead to them damaging themselves by running into fences. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
