Fleet Enema,
trademark for a manufactured enema formula containing 16 g sodium biphosphate and 6 g sodium phosphate per 100 mL solution. It is available in disposable plastic pouches fitted with prelubricated rectal tubes. enema [en´ĕ-mah] (Gr.) 1. introduction of fluid into the rectum. 2. a solution introduced into the rectum to promote evacuation of feces or as a means of administering nutrient substances, medicinal substances, or opaque material for radiologic examination of the lower intestinal tract; see also barium test. Unless otherwise prescribed, the solution is warmed to 40.5°C (105°F), the patient is placed in Sims' position or knee-chest position, and the rectal tube is inserted. The container of fluid is usually held about 45 cm (18 in) above the buttocks for a cleansing enema. Various types of enema are shown in the accompanying table. On day of procedure, repeat dose 3 to 5 hours before procedure. ➣ Constipation Adults and children older than age 12: 20- to 30-ml solution mixed with 120 ml cold water P.O., or 60 to 135 ml P.R. as an enema Contraindications• Hypertension PrecautionsUse cautiously in: Administration• Mix oral solution as indicated on label. Have patient drink it right away.

Electrolytes: decreased levels (with prolonged use) Phosphate, sodium: increased levels Patient monitoring• Monitor fluid balance, electrolyte levels, and cardiovascular status if patient is using drug regularly.
