fleam
a medieval lancet used for drawing blood in the blood-letting therapeutic procedure. A straight metal bar with a downward protruding, small, sharp, fixed blade. The blade was poised over a distended vein and given a sharp thump with a hardwood mallet held in the other hand.

Those three--Wulfstan, AElfhere, and Maccus--"noldon aet pam forda fleam gewyrcan, / ac hi faestlice wid da fynd weredon / pa hwile pe hi waepna wealdan moston" ("refused to take flight from the ford; / rather they defended themselves staunchly against the enemy / for as long as they could wield weapons") (81-83).
