Flame Cell
A plasma cell with intensely eosinophilic—flaming—cytoplasm containing glycoprotein globules; flame cells were regarded as specific for IgA myelomas, but also occur in Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia and African trypanosoma leptomeningitis near clustered neutrophils in which it is similar, but membrane-bound

flame
1. the luminous, irregular appearance usually accompanying combustion, or an appearance resembling it.
2. to render sterile by exposure to a flame.

flame cell
the excretory cell in cestodes and trematodes; their number and arrangement is a basis for identification.
flame figure
in skin lesions such as insect bite reactions, eosinophilic granulomas; characterized by areas of altered collagen surrounded by eosinophils and eosinophilic cytoplasmic granules.
flame follicle
inactive hair follicles with excessive trichilemmal keratinization.

In our series, we found that the cytologic features that appeared to be useful in distinguishing SPHTN from PTC included flame cell change, watery or inspissated colloid, short nonbranching papillae, and lack of intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions.
Plasma cells varied in size and shape and included atypical forms, binucleated cells, and flame cells (Figure).
