nail biting,
the habit of excessive biting and chewing one's fingernails and periungual skin, sometimes leading to cutaneous injury. The condition is commonly associated with body manipulations of anxious children. It is also considered a form of motor discharges of inner tension. The recommended treatment includes daily bandaging of injured fingers and frequent applications of a distasteful topical preparation. Also called onychophagia.
