fine-needle aspiration,
a diagnostic technique that uses a very thin needle and gentle suction to obtain tissue samples, most commonly used for breast and thyroid biopsies. The needle is thinner than that used for venipuncture, and the procedure is less painful than drawing of blood. Usually the procedure is done on an outpatient basis, and no anesthetic is used. The aspirated tissue is examined by a pathologist. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
