an intermediate filament-associated protein which is involved in cross-linking of keratin; the main constituent of keratohyalin in the granular layer of the epidermis.

If eczema, hayfever and asthma run in your family, you and your children have a higher risk of developing eczema as it's almost certainly down to a group of genes, one of them being filaggrin We call this having an atopic family, and the risk of passing eczema on to your kids increases even more if both you and your partner have a history of allergies.
Health scientist Professor Aziz Sheikh, of the University of Edinburgh, has revealed that the mutation identified by the research team is related to the filaggrin gene, which helps skin produce a protective barrier against the foreign bodies that trigger allergies.
Other new tests available include the ProGenotyper Filaggrin Mutation Detection Test, the latest in the company's menu of molecular assays to investigate skin diseases, and the T-Cell Rx assay, which adds to its line of tests for adverse drug reactions and assists physicians assessing patients who have experienced a delayed drug reaction.
