| In contemporary America's automobile society, Piano has employed figure/ground tactics, reminiscent of Nolli's eighteenth-century map of Rome, that give priority to external pedestrian space and are capable of integrating 'found' buildings. This piece sat atop a two-tiered base to constitute exscape I and replicated in miniature the larger figure/ground play of the individual sculptures in which the "pedestals" are just slightly more interesting than the objects placed on them. The cognitive dissonance customarily wrought by figure/ground relationships is toyed with, yet the effect is neither to introduce depth nor to stabilize the pictorial field. |
