cartilage that consists of a dense matrix of white collagenous fibers. Of the three kinds of cartilage in the body, fibrocartilage has the greatest tensile strength. Fibrocartilaginous disks between the vertebrae help cushion the jolts to which the vertebral column is continually subjected. See also hyaline cartilage. fibrocartilaginous, adj.

n very strong, relatively inflexible cartilage found in the meniscus (in the knee joint), intervertebral discs, and pubic symphysis.

Consistent with our radiographic findings, histologic analysis revealed no remarkable differences at 7 and 21 days because all fracture sites consisted of undifferentiated mesenchyme and fibrocartilage at the early time point and remodeling bone at the latter time point (Figure 3).
