Fibrinolysis The clot dissolving portion of the coagulation process. Mentioned in: Fibrin Split Products fibrinolysis [fī′brinol′isis] the continual process of fibrin decomposition by fibrinolysin that is the normal mechanism for the removal of small fibrin clots. It is stimulated by anoxia, inflammatory reactions, and other kinds of stress. fibrinolytic, adj. fibrinolysis (fī´brinol´isis), n the continual process of fibrin decomposition during the removal of small fibrin clots by the action of enzyme fibrinolysin. fibrinolysis the dissolution of fibrin by enzymatic action. pathological fibrinolysis see primary fibrinolysis (below). primary fibrinolysis occurs with an excess of activators or decreased plasma inhibitors that cause hyperplasminemia, as in severe liver disease, heat stroke and malignancy. secondary fibrinolysis is a response to the widespread formation of microthrombi as in disseminated intravascular coagulation. The adipose tissue also secretes factors that are implicated in inflammatory processes, blood pressure, coagulation and fibrinolysis that can influence the development of cardiovascular disease. In an in vitro study, (18) enhancement of fibrinolysis using US was observed, and the authors concluded that US at 1 MHz potentiates enzymatic fibrinolysis by nonthermal means. While several studies have demonstrated exercise-induced activation of both fibrinolysis and coagulation (8), the effect of marathon running on hemostatic balance has not been well studied. |
