nucleolus /nu·cle·o·lus/ (noo-kle´o-lus) pl. nucle´oli   [L.] a rounded refractile body in the nucleus of most cells, which is the site of synthesis of ribosomal RNA.

A small, typically round granular body composed of protein and RNA in the nucleus of a cell, usually associated with a specific chromosomal site and involved in ribosomal RNA synthesis and the formation of ribosomes.

any one of the small, dense structures composed largely of ribonucleic acid that are situated within the cytoplasm of cells. Nucleoli are essential in the formation of ribosomes that synthesize cell proteins.
