ferrous /fer·rous/ (fer´us) containing iron in its plus-two oxidation state, Fe(II) (sometimes designated Fe2+). Various salts are used in iron deficiency, including iron fumarate, iron gluconate, and iron sulfate.
fer·rous (frs)
adj.
Of, relating to, or containing iron, especially with a valence of 2 or a valence lower than in a corresponding ferric compound.

ferrous
[fer′əs]
pertaining to a compound of iron in which the metal is divalent, such as ferrous ammonium sulfate. See also iron.

ferrous [fer´us]
containing iron in its plus-two oxidation state, Fe(II) (sometimes designated Fe2+).
ferrous fumarate an oral iron preparation used in the treatment of iron deficiency.
ferrous gluconate a hematinic that is less irritating to the gastrointestinal tract than other hematinics, and generally used as a substitute when ferrous sulfate cannot be tolerated.
ferrous sulfate the most widely used hematinic for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. It is believed to be less irritating than equivalent amounts of ferric salts and is more effective.

All iron preparations should be administered after meals, never on an empty stomach. The patient should be warned that the drugs cause stools to turn dark green or black. Overdosage may cause severe systemic reactions.

ferrous fumarate
the anhydrous salt of a combination of ferrous iron and fumaric acid; used as a hematinic.
ferrous gluconate
a hematinic that is less irritating to the gastrointestinal tract than other hematinics, and generally used as a substitute when ferrous sulfate cannot be tolerated.
ferrous selinite
is insoluble and soils rich in iron oxide tend to be nontoxic because of the formation of this compound.
ferrous sulfate
the most widely used hematinic for the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia. It is believed to be less irritating than equivalent amounts of ferric salts and is more effective.

However, the results of many studies, including a large (n=427) randomised controlled trial, found that gastro-intestinal side effects associated with iron supplementation did not differ between women supplemented daily with 20, 40, 60 or 80 mg elemental iron in the form of ferrous fumarate (Milman, Byg, Bergholt & Erikson, 2006).
Other forms of iron supplements, such as ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate, haem iron concentrate and iron glycine amino acid chelate are readily absorbed and less likely to cause side effects.
The "granddaddy" of iron supplements, ferrous sulfate, seems to be more of a troublemaker than the later organic "grandchildren," such as ferrous fumarate.
