fentanyl /fen·ta·nyl/ (fen´tah-nil) an opioid analgesic; the citrate salt is used as an adjunct to anesthesia, in the induction and maintenance of anesthesia, in combination with droperidol (or similar agent) as a neuroleptanalgesic, and in the management of chronic severe pain.

Wilson Abel, 31, is facing 24 separate charges, including 12 counts of stealing ampules of fentanyl citrate from a woman at St Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital, Cork.
Stealing approximately 120 ampoules of fentanyl for his own use has resulted in registered nurse Dan Erik Hansson having his registration cancelled.
