cherubism /cher·ub·ism/ (cher´ub-izm) hereditary progressive bilateral swelling at the angle of the mandible, and sometimes the entire jaw, giving a cherubic look to the face, in some cases enhanced by upturning of the eyes.

Etymology: Heb, kerubh
an abnormal hereditary condition characterized by progressive bilateral swelling at the angle of the mandible, especially in children. In some cases of cherubism, the entire jaw swells and the eyes turn up, enhancing the cherubic facial appearance. The condition tends to regress during adult life.

An autosomal dominant [MIM 118400] condition, with 100% penetration in males who have a cherub-like physiognomy, that may be first recognised by age 5, when a child is obviously not losing the ‘baby fat’ in the face

cherubism (familial intraosseous swelling) (cher´biz´m),
n 1. a fibroosseous disease of the jaws of genetic nature. The swollen jaws and raised eyes give a cherubic appearance; multiple radiolucencies are evident on radiographic examination.
2. a familial form of fibrous dysplasia characterized by unilateral or, more often, bilateral swelling of the jaws in children. See also dysplasia, fibrous.
