continuing education,
formal educational programs designed to promote knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes. The programs are usually short-term and specific. A certificate may be awarded for completion of a course, and a number of continuing education units or contact hours may be conferred. Continuing education is required for relicensure in many states. It is not to be confused with academic degree-granting programs, such as advanced education or graduate education. See also contact hour.

continuing education,
n postgraduate study offered either in an institution of higher learning by groups with an organized dental program or by individuals who are especially qualified in certain areas. Required by most state licensing boards for license renewal for dental professionals. Credit accumulates for special qualifications to join special interest groups.

continuing education
educational courses relating to veterinary science, provided by an institution or recognized organization which supplements, brings up to date and refreshes the information that the graduate veterinarian already has. In some countries and professions a specified amount of such education is required to be completed each year by each veterinarian who wishes to continue his/her registration.

It is produced by Eat Smart NY educators, a Cornell Cooperative Extension program that receives training and technical assistance from nutritional sciences senior extension associate Joan Paddock and associate professor Jamie Dollahite.
In addition to courses and classes that are offered by gardening centers, many colleges and universities -- through community extension programs -- now offer gardening and landscaping classes to people who live in the community in which these institutions of higher education are located.
Byline: Daily News VALENCIA -- Emeritus College, the newly renamed extension program at College of the Canyons Extension, has expanded its course offerings for older students with the goal of promoting seniors' mental and physical health.
