| Unlike tamoxifen, which works by blocking estrogen receptors on cells, the aromatase inhibitors anastrazole (Arimidex), exemestane (Aromasin) and letrozole (Femara) work by preventing androgen hormones from turning into estrogen in the first place. The effect of exemestane on serum lipid profile in postmenopausal women with metastatic breast cancer: a companion study to EORTC Trial 10951, 'Randomized phase II study in first line hormonal treatment for metastatic breast cancer with exemestane or tamoxifen in postmenopausal patients. Study coordinator Professor John Forbes from the University of Newcastle, NSW, said it was still unknown whether it would have been more effective to use exemestane from the time of diagnosis, as the women in the study were already two years post-diagnosis. |
