oxygen debt, the quantity of oxygen that the lungs take up during recovery from exercise or apnea that is in excess of the quantity needed for resting metabolism before the exercise or apnea. Oxygen debt represents replenishment of the oxygen store that was depleted during the time that oxygen uptake from the air was inadequate for aerobic metabolism.
