members of the families Bothidae and Pleuronectidae; flatfish with eyes on the same side of the head.

flounder ulcer disease
progressive and sometimes fatal ulceration in greenback flounder and probably other species of flatfish. Caused by Aeromonas salmonicida. See also atypical aeromonassalmonicida.

In this paper we have presented our results on three members of the Pleuronectiformes (flatfishes): the European plaice Pleuronectes platessa and the European flounder Platichthys flesus trachurus, both in the family Pleuronectidae, and the turbot Scophthalmus maximus of the family Scophthalmidae.
Generally the spined scales for the European flounder and European plaice are ctenoid scales.
The ctenoid scales in the European flounder appreciably differ from the peripheral ctenoid scales in the European plaice, while some difficulties arise with the specification of the scale subtype for the flounder.
