etidronate /eti·dro·nate/ (e-tĭ-dro´nāt) a diphosphonate compound used for treatment of osteitis deformans, heterotopic ossification, and neoplasm-associated hypercalcemia, usually as the disodium salt. | The risedronate was suspended for 2 weeks every 6 weeks and replaced with etidronate at 400 mg/day, and the dietary plan was extended. The only other drawback: "The first bisphosphonate, etidronate (Didronel), caused osteomalacia, which is an inability to incorporate calcium and other minerals into the bone," says Sellmeyer. Actonel is the second bisphosphonate invented by Procter & Gamble, which pioneered the use of this class of drug in bone disease with cyclical etidronate and calcium, currently marketed in 22 countries, in Canada under the name Didrocal(R). |
