| At the ethnobiology conference in Georgia, plant breeder Mary Eubanks, president of Sun Dance Genetics in Durham, North Carolina, and adjunct professor of plant genetics at Duke University, proposed that archaeobotanical investigations into the cultivation history of maize can yield safer, more robust varieties free of the potential health risks of genetically engineered varieties. Maya ICBG is "a big business, while for our communities and doctors, the plants continue to be sacred plants," said Margarito Ruiz Hernandez, director of the Chiapas-based Centro de Capacitacion para el Desarrollo de Comunidades Indigenas, at an ethnobiology symposium last year.
