ethinyl /eth·i·nyl/ (eth´ĭ-nil) the radical HCtbondC—, derived from acetylene.
ethinyl estradiol  a semisynthetic derivative of estradiol; used in combination with a progestational agent as an oral contraceptive, in hormone replacement therapy, and as an antineoplastic in the treatment of advanced breast and prostate cancers.

Ethinyl estradiol
A semi-synthetic derivative of estradiol—an estrogen or female sex hormone—used in birth control pills and combined ECPs.

indications It is prescribed in the treatment of postmenopausal breast cancer, menstrual cycle irregularities, prostatic cancer, and hypogonadism and for contraception and relief of menopausal vasomotor symptoms.
contraindications Thrombophlebitis, abnormal genital bleeding, known or suspected pregnancy, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are thrombophlebitis, embolism, and hypercalcemia. See also estrogen.

More recently, in the December 2004 issue of EHP, Jon Nash and colleagues showed that long-term laboratory exposure to environmental concentrations of the pharmaceutical ethinyl estradiol caused reproductive failure in zebrafish.
While the Yuzpe regimen of emergency contraception--calling for two doses of oral contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel--remains the standard, different formulations and ways of taking pills after unprotected sex may be equally effective in preventing pregnancy.
Oral contraceptives: Aprepitant, when given once daily for 14 days as a 100-mg capsule with an oral contraceptive containing 35 mcg of ethinyl estradiol and 1 mg of norethindrone, decreased the AUC of ethinyl estradiol by 43%, and decreased the AUC of norethindrone by 8%.
