No references found | The ruling comes as something of a blow to German spelling reformists who had been keen to scrap the Eszett from the alphabet altogether, arguing that because it was the size of a capital letter it was quite literally a waste of space. Lastly, the eszett ([beta]) character was replaced by a double-s in hundreds of words, with the result that a number of words such as "Missstand" [a deplorable state of affairs] now more than ever seem begging to be hissed: "Ein Missstand amp;#183; The German alphabet has the standard 26 letters, plus three vowels that take an umlaut (ä, ö and ü), plus that squiggly B (ß), which is actually a "sharp s" or eszett. |
