esophageal web,

a thin membrane that may develop across the lumen of the esophagus, usually near the level of the cricoid cartilage. The abnormal condition is generally associated with iron deficiency anemia and usually disappears when the underlying problem is resolved. See also Plummer-Vinson syndrome.

A 2-3 mm in thickness stricture composed of mucosa and submucosa only, which is located anywhere along the length of the esophageal lumen; upper esophageal webs occur in the upper 2-4 cm of the esophagus, are lined by squamous epithelium, often associated with the Plummer-Vinson syndrome, and after yrs may evolve into postcricoid carcinoma; webs in the body of the esophagus may be multiple, represent embryonal remnants and may be associated with esophageal reflux; the lower esophageal web is a thin membrane marking the squamocolumnar junction and is seen in ±10% of normal subjects; symptomatic subjects may suffer intermittent dysphagia and impaction of a bolus of food Treatment Intraluminal balloon dilatation.
