An inexpensive, benzimidazole-type scolicidal anthelmintic, with a broad range of anti-parasitic activity against nematodes (roundworms—ascariasis, enterobiasis hookworm infection, strongyloidiasis, trichuriasis), cestodes (flatworms—cysticercosis, echinococcosis), protozoa (giardiasis, microsporidiosis) and possibly microsporidiosis, which can be used in conjunction with percutaneous drainage for managing hepatic hydatid cysts.
 
Susceptible organisms
Ascaris lumbricoides, Giardia lamblia, hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus, Hymenolepsis nana, Opisthorchis viverrini, Strongyloides stercoralis, Taenia solium, Trichuris trichiuria).
 
Adverse effects
Abdominal pain, headaches, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, alopecia, increased aminotransferase, neutropenia.
