esculin (es´k n a glucoside from horse-chestnut bark; used as a sunburn protective. esculin, aesculin a hydroxycoumarin glycoside found in the bark of Aesculus spp. Together with ferric citrate, it is used in a broth for the identification of some bacteria which cause hydrolysis and a color change. In the investigations after July 23, 2005, the results matched the suggested key indicators for the pathogen, including Voges-Proskauer negativity, hydrolysis of esculin, trehalose positivity, negativity for growth in 6. However, this strain, which was designated CCH052683, did not hydrolyze gelatin or esculin. Growth was observed on anaerobic phenylethyl alcohol agar; attempts to grow the organisms on kanamycin-vancomycin laked blood and bacteroides bile esculin agars (PML Microbiologicals) failed. |
