ergocalciferol /er·go·cal·cif·er·ol/ (er″go-kal-sif´er-ol) vitamin D; a sterol occurring in fungi and some fish oils or synthesized from ergosterol, with similar activity and metabolism to those of cholecalciferol; used as a dietary source of vitamin D and in the treatment of hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, rickets, and osteodystrophy associated with a variety of disorders.

See calciferol. ergocalciferol [er″go-kal-sif´er-ol] vitamin D2; a sterol occurring naturally in fungi and some fish oils or synthesized from ergosterol, and similar to cholecalciferol in activity and metabolism; it is administered orally or added to food (e.g., milk) as a dietary source of vitamin D. It is also used in treatment of hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, rickets, and osteodystrophy associated with various medical conditions including chronic renal failure and hypoparathyroidism, administered orally, intramuscularly, or intravenously.
