Patient discussion about Erg (unit).

Q. I''ve been having the erge to eat without being able to stop for a few days now. Is that an eating disorder? I'm trying to study- which is real hard for me cause I have ADD and get up every 5 seconds to get something to eat. Even when I'm not hungry and I cant stop it. it's been like that for like 3 days now and I feel I'm gaining weight. I dont want that!! that's girl's buissness usually!! what to do? is it an eating disorder or just stress from not being able to study or an excuse I'm giving myself or what?? Is gonna last? what do u think? please, I really dont know what to do....any help...

A. Generally, if you don't have any other concomitant diseases or take drugs that influences weight and appetite, what you describe doesn't sound as eating disorder - you don't seem to have preoccupation with food or your weight, you don't purge and it doesn't seem to interfere with your daily functioning (and additionally, 3 days doesn't make it a chronic problem).

What it seem you might have, especially taking into account the association between the stressful time you have now, is maybe a problem in dealing with stress -you feel an intense stress and can't comprehend with the requirements well (you have problem concentrating) so you turn to eating (i.e. self-medicating with food) - I think you should put the emphasis on this area.

Anyway, if you feel this problem is too big or disturbing your life, you can always seek more professional advice (e.g. psychologist).
