The genus Epistylis Ehrenberg (1830) includes approximately 100 described species of sessile ciliates, most of which are believed to live as epibionts on crustaceans, insects, rotifers, and aquatic plants in marine and freshwater environments (utz, 2007).
Some authors have found Epistylis attached only to adult copepods.
They were interspersed with massive growths of Epistylis sp.
The second group had been positively correlated with the axis 2 of DCA and was characterized by most samples of the bottom, where prevailed Epistylis anastatica, Mesodinium pulex, Pelagovorticella mayeri, Plagyocampa rouxi, Platynematum sociale, Rimostrombidium humile, Stokesia vernalis, Urotricha sp.
The authors observed an exponential growth of colonies of Epistylis pygmaeum Ehrenberg, 1838, from a single zooid, attached to the rotifer Brachionus angularis (Gosse, 1851), but no actual growth or colonization rates were calculated for the trophont stage of this species.
