epiphora /epiph·o·ra/ (e-pif´or-ah) [Gr.] overflow of tears due to obstruction of lacrimal duct.

Watering of the eyes due to a blockage of the lacrimal ducts or the excessive secretion of tears.

epiphora
an abnormal overflow of tears down the face, due usually to stricture of the nasolacrimal duct. Called also illacrimation.

epiphora
Overflow of tears due to faulty apposition of the lacrimal puncta in the lacrimal lake, scarring of the puncta, paresis of the orbicularis muscle, obstruction of the lacrimal passage or ectropion. This impairment of the outflow of tears is often unilateral. The main symptoms are discomfort and blurring of vision and sometimes embarrassment. Management depends on the cause. Syn. watery eye (colloquial). See dacryops; hyperlacrimation.

Introduction Epiphora is caused by a variety of conditions that affect tear production, tear flow, and the function of the eyelids.
Other symptoms include fetor, epistaxis, sinusitis, headache and, in rare cases, epiphora.
Less severe cases can be characterized by an asymmetric prominence of the face, nasal or sinus obstruction, exophthalmos, and epiphora.
