In laboratory experiments by Soll's group, mobile syncytia disrupted membranes made from collagen, a major structural protein in lymph nodes, and punched holes in endothelial tissue, which lines blood vessels.
Such complications include inflammation, creation of thrombus (blood clots) and, importantly, re-narrowing of arteries due to endothelial tissue re-growth inside blood vessels in the area of newly implanted stents.
