In 1982, Mulliken and Glowacki described a clinically relevant classification of vascular anomalies in which these lesions were categorized according to their endothelial cell characteristics. Nebert and colleagues administered low doses of cadmium to mice and demonstrated that the SLC39A8 (ZIP8) protein, coded by the Slc39a8 gene, transported cadmium to the testis, causing vascular endothelial cell injury and subsequent testicular tissue death. For example, the researchers grew human cancer cells and endothelial cells together in lab dishes. |
