e·lec·tro·my·o·gram (-lktr-m-grm)
n. Abbr. EMG
A graphic record of the electrical activity of a muscle as recorded by an electromyograph.

Electromyogram (EMG)
A diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of muscles. In the test, small electrodes are placed on or in the skin; the patterns of electrical activity are projected on a screen or over a loudspeaker. This procedure is used to test for muscle disorders, including muscular dystrophy.
Mentioned in: Myopathies

electromyogram (EMG)
[ilek′trōmī′əgram′]
a record of the intrinsic electric activity in a skeletal muscle. Such data aid the diagnosis of neuromuscular problems and are obtained by applying surface electrodes or by inserting a needle electrode into the muscle and observing electric activity with an oscilloscope and a loudspeaker. Some electromyograms show abnormalities, such as spontaneous electric potentials within the muscle under study, and help pinpoint lesions of motor nerves. Electromyograms also measure electric potentials induced by voluntary muscular contraction. See also electroneuromyography.

electromyogram [e-lek″tro-mi´o-gram]
the record obtained by electromyography.

electromyogram
the record obtained by electromyography. Abbreviated EMG.

electromyogram (EMG)
Recording of electrical activity of a muscle associated with contraction and relaxation. This is obtained by placing a microelectrode within a muscle. The recording process is called electro-myography. See Sherrington's law of reciprocal innervation.

The goal of this procedure is to improve control of prostheses that use electromyogram (EMG) signals (the electrical signals generated during muscle contraction) from residual limb muscles to control motorized arm joints.
Cough frequency was determined by counting the number of audible coughs and abdominal muscle contractions measured with a surface electromyogram recorder.
He recommended that I try physical therapy and scheduled an electromyogram (EMG) and nerve conduction studies to provide a definitive diagnosis.
