an adrenergic alkaloid obtained from several species of the shrub Ephedra or produced synthetically; used as a bronchodilator, antiasthmatic, central nervous system stimulant, and pressor agent. Administered orally, parenterally, or intranasally as the hydrochloride, sulfate, or tannate salt. Besides its prescribed uses, it is also an ingredient in numerous supplements, with claimed benefits including weight loss, increased energy, and enhanced athletic performance.

indications It is prescribed in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis and is used topically as a nasal decongestant. The drug is historically important, but its use is now limited because of the availability of more selective beta-2 agonists for treating asthma.
contraindications Concomitant administration of monoamine oxidase inhibitors, hypertension, cardiac artery disease, cardiac arrhythmia, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are nervousness, insomnia, anorexia, and increased blood pressure.

A drug with a similar action to ADRENALINE but with a more stimulant effect on the nervous system, causing tremor, anxiety, insomnia and undue alertness. It is used to treat allergic conditions and ASTHMA. Ephedrine nasal drops decongest a swollen nose lining. The drug is on the WHO official list. A brand name is CAM. Ephedrine is also formulated with other drugs under the brand names of Franol, Franol Plus and Haymine.
