Medtalk A nonsalaried employee–eg, 'temp' nurse, 'per-diem' physician, consultant, etc, who provides a service at a rate higher than that of a salaried full-time employees, who is hired on an 'as-needed' basis; ICs don't receive health benefits, retirement contributions, paid vacation, or have part of their pay deducted for taxes.
