eburnation

(ē′bər-nā′shən, ĕb′ər-)
n.
Degeneration of bone into a hard, ivorylike mass, as that which occurs at the articular surfaces of bones in osteoarthritis.

eburnation

A specific type of bone sclerosis consisting of a marbled appearance of weight-bearing joints with complete cartilaginous erosion, leaving polished, sclerotic bone as the new articular surface. Cross-section of the articulation reveals a narrowed joint space, osteosclerosis and cystic changes overlying the affected bone, which is surrounded by bony and cartilaginous overgrowths (osteophytes/exostoses).

eburnation

1. The loss or thinning of the bearing cartilage of a joint, that occurs in degenerative disease such as OSTEOARTHRITIS, so that the underlying bone is exposed and becomes dense and polished by friction.
2. The burnishing or hardening of the exposed DENTINE of a tooth that results from the calcification of the soft material in the tubules.

conversion of subchondral bone to ivory-like bone, due to cartilage loss; characteristic of degenerative joint disease
