Coincidentally, as reported in Saturday's Racing Post, a research paper published this month, titled 'Efficacy of furosemide for prevention of exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in thoroughbred racehorses' (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, July 2009), concluded that "pre-race administration of furosemide decreased the incidence and severity of EIPH in thoroughbreds racing under typical conditions in South Africa".
The groundbreaking research, conducted jointly by Colorado State University, the University of Melbourne and the University of Pretoria, and involving 167 horses racing in South Africa, showed that giving furosemide before a race dramatically reduced the incidence and severity of EIPH.
EIPH has often been put forward as an explanation for a horse's poor performance when other factors may also have played a part.
