benzoic acid /ben·zo·ic ac·id/ (ben-zo´ik) a fungistatic compound used as a pharmaceutical and food preservative and, with salicylic acid, as a topical antifungal agent.

An aromatic white crystalline acid used to season tobacco and in perfumes, dentifrices, and germicides.

benzoic acid
[benzō′ik]
a keratolytic agent, usually used with salicylic acid as an ointment in the treatment of athlete's foot and ringworm of the scalp. It has little antifungal action but makes deep infections accessible to more potent preparation. Mild irritation may occur at the site of application.

benzoic acid
an acid from benzoin and other resins and from coal tar, used as an antifungal agent in pharmaceutical preparations and as a germicide. The sodium salt of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate, is used as an antifungal agent in pharmaceutical preparations, and may be used as a test for liver function. It was at one time used as a food preservative although now replaced in pet foods because of its toxicity in cats.
