Afzelius and colleagues showed that in people with Kartagener syndrome, certain cilia are missing protein structures called the dynein arms, which make up the motor that allows the cilia to move.
Similarly, biflagellate sperms commonly observed in fish from location III were also detected with lack of dynein arms in humans, by Baccetti et al.
Electron microscopy in combination with improved biochemical techniques were used to demonstrate the localization of ATPase activity in dynein arms.
