dura mater /du·ra ma·ter/ (doo´rah ma´ter) the outermost, toughest of the three meninges (membranes) of the brain and spinal cord.

The tough fibrous membrane covering the brain and the spinal cord and lining the inner surface of the skull. Also called dura, pachymeninx.

Dura mater
One of the membranes that sheathes the spinal cord and brain; the dura mater is the outermost layer.

the outermost and most fibrous of the three membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The dura mater encephali covers the brain, and the dura mater spinalis covers the cord. See also meninges.
