dry eye syndrome, a dryness of the cornea and conjunctiva caused by a deficiency in tear production or altered tear film composition. It results in a sensation of a foreign body in the eye, burning eyes, keratitis, and erosion of the epithelial layers of the cornea and conjunctiva.
