Now a recent study reveals that exposure to even tiny amounts of domoic acid in utero may produce subtle, long-term cognitive impairment in rats.
With the domoic acid outbreak in 2002, the number of debilitated sea lions rose tremendously.
Because it was badly decomposed, officials could not say what might have killed it, but the death raised concerns about algae-produced domoic acid that has been poisoning sea lions recently off the Ventura County coast.
